Declan took on the role of Director of International Newcastle in October 2018. She is passionate about internationalism and has 25 years of experience in collaborative working, policy and partnership development, lobbying and advocacy at local, regional, national and European levels.
She has a strong track record of delivering transformational change through partnership working across the public, private, voluntary and community sectors within the North East of England and with other European regions.
Declan was a European policy adviser for 8 years, working with politicians representing the region in European policy discussions, including Committee of the Regions, Assembly of European Regions, Council of Europe and Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions, as well as developing and supporting a series of international projects.
She was part of the NewcastleGateshead European Capital of Culture team and was engaged in extensive community and sector consultation, as well as developing the international strategy with partners.
She then worked as a Local Strategic Partnership Manager in Wansbeck for 5 years, bringing partners and resources together to tackle the causes and impacts of deprivation on local communities, before going freelance in 2009.
As a freelancer, she has worked with extensively with cultural sector (including supporting the groundbreaking partnership of NewcastleGateshead Cultural Venues for 9 years) and working on regional initiatives such as Creative Fuse North East (with the 5 regional universities, digital and cultural sectors), Family Explorers NE and Inspiring Partnerships. Declan continues to work with the voluntary and community sector, delivering focused support around policy and partnership development, evaluation and capacity building.
