Newcastles of the World
Newcastles of the World is a friendship alliance that brings together in a single network towns and cities that share the name “Newcastle” in their own language. It was established in 1998 by the Mayor of Shinshiro City in Japan. The core members of the alliance meet every two years and the secretariat is provided in Newcastle upon Tyne by David Faulkner and Zelie Guerin.
The alliance aims to build friendship between people and organisations in different Newcastles, to further understanding of different countries and cultures through its activities, to develop projects of mutual benefit and to share best practice in areas of common interest so that we can learn from each other.
A biennial conference reviews progress and sets the targets for the next two years ahead; these are developed through discussion and approved by a session at the end of each conference by the mayors and mayoral representatives. This is set out in a conference report/declaration which is then presented to the full conference before it ends and posted on our website. The next conference will be in city of Neuchâtel in Switzerland.
There are a range of projects and initiatives and sharing of good practice and information:
- Youth Forum
- Business and Tourism
