Children from across the North East have been taking part in Express Yourself: North East Festival of Languages‘ Mother Tongue Other Tongue creative writing activity.
We are delighted to share four of the latest submissions from children at Benfield School in Newcastle. These are all written in their home languages (Mother Tongue) of Portuguese, Polish and Arabic and include reflections on love, friendship, loyalty, why it’s good to be a kid and the national anthem of one of their mother countries. See their entries below.
Click here to find out more about Mother Tongue Other Tongue. There is still time to get involved (up to 24th March). Children aged 7-18 years old in schools, community schools or groups can submit a poem, song or remembered piece in their home language (Mother Tongue) and those learning a new language submit original pieces of poetic writing (Other Tongue). Everyone who is entered will receive a certificate. A selection from across the North East will be included in the Mother Tongue Other Tongue 2023 anthology ebook.
International Newcastle supports this project, alongside the Association of Language Learning North East and staff and students at Newcastle University’s Language Resource Centre. Co-ordinated by Crista Hazell.
