Call for donations to support Afghan refugees

There are a range of organisations in Newcastle supporting refugees and asylum seekers from Afghanistan following the latest events.

Our colleagues at North East Solidarity and Teaching (N.E.S.T.) are putting together 300 carepacks for newly arrived male asylum seekers.

Most asylum seekers arriving in the UK have little to no material possessions, clothing or toiletries. N.E.S.T would be very grateful for anything people can donate or any financial donation.

What items to donate and where

N.E.S.T are collecting:

  • New and unopened toiletries: shower gel, shampoo, hair brushes, flannels, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap
  • Clothing – new or good quality second hand men’s clothing, primarily small and medium sizes: Pyjamas, T-shirts, long sleeved tops, jeans/trousers, jumpers, waterproof coats, shoes, flip-flops

Please drop your donations at the front desk of the King’s Gate Building, Newcastle University – postcode NE1 7RU. This is the building opposite Newcastle Civic Centre and St. Thomas’ Church next to Haymarket Metro Station and on the same side of the road as Blackwell’s Bookshop. (See city centre map here and a picture of the building below)

How to give a financial donation

Financial donations are welcome as they enable items to be purchased to meet the needs of those coming to the city, including buying items for children, toiletries, socks and underwear and bags for the donations.

If you are able to make a financial donation, please make it to the account below:

  • Bank: Lloyds
  • Account Name: Newcastle University Students’ Union

About N.E.S.T.

North East Solidarity and Teaching (N.E.S.T) is a multi-award winning and internationally-recognised student-led project at Newcastle University Students Union (NUSU) that is managed by Go Volunteer. N.E.S.T empowers the refugee and asylum-seeking community in the region through a variety of formats such as one-to-one English teaching, group English classes, sports, creative arts and trips into the local area.

Through N.E.S.T, learners (refugees and asylum seekers) gain confidence in English, find new friends and become better integrated into the community. N.E.S.T runs every day, providing many sessions each week for people of all ages. Through the delivery of these lessons, refugees improve their written and verbal communication skills enabling them to gain necessary language qualifications required for employment and the ability to live a fulfilling life in the UK.
