German teacher exchange programme on AI (apply by 5th Oct)

The Goethe-Institut and the State Education Department of North Rhine-Westphalia are launching a new teacher exchange programme this autumn.

This initiative will bring together 20 secondary school teachers from Germany and the UK to explore the use of Artificial Intelligence in language classrooms. The programme includes a two-day conference in London (1-2 November), a four-day stay in schools in the UK (3-6 November).

The application deadline is 5 October 2025, more information can be found at Artificial Intelligence in the languages classroom – Goethe-Institut United Kingdom

At the heart of this initiative is collaboration:

  • Work closely with a visiting teacher from Germany at your own school, share insights, and explore how AI can enrich language learning—together. Through hands-on group work and lively conference days in London, you’ll:
  • Exchange ideas and teaching practices with colleagues from Germany and from the UK
  • Discover fresh perspectives on using AI meaningfully in the classroom
  • Get inspired by real-life examples, classroom-tested ideas, and ‘best practice’ case studies
  • Join an international network of curious, forward-thinking language teachers

Terms of participation

The practice-orientated research project ‘Artificial intelligence in language-related educational practice’ is an initiative of the Goethe-Institut London, the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the participating secondary schools in the UK.

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is organising the selection of teachers from Germany who will visit schools in the UK, while the Goethe-Institut is organising the project, finding partner schools in the UK and organising a multi-day conference in London.

Participating schools in the UK will take on the practical action research at their own school, using the didactic material provided, as well as the accommodation of visiting teachers. (Visiting teachers receive a travel allowance for food and transport. Only housing will be needed.)

Participating schools in the UK commit to:

  • facilitate the visit of a teacher from Germany to their own school, and provide a tandem partner from their German department.
  • provide accommodation for the visiting teacher from Germany during the project days at their school. The accommodation should be close to the school and easily accessible by public transport. (The visiting teachers receive a travel budget to cover meals and transport).
  • The participating (tandem) teacher from the British school will be given time off during the project and conference days to carry out the action research together with the visiting teacher in a practice-oriented way in German lessons using the didactic resources provided.
  • The participating teacher from the British school will be released from their usual duties during the conference days in London. Organisation and costs for the conference (travel, meals, accommodation) will be covered by the Goethe-Institut.
