Warum German/y: secondary schools webinar and resource pack for teachers

Updated 5th February 2021

179 teachers and over 1000 pupils from KS3-KS5 were involved in our Warum? webinar for schools in Newcastle, North East and the UK on 25th January. The webinar explored Newcastle and the region’s links with Germany and celebrated German culture, language and business.

Warum – Why Germany?

Newcastle and the North East have very strong ties with Germany – from our post-war twinning links, to business, civil society, cultural and education links – and what’s more, thousands of Germans live in our region.

This webinar was specifically designed to help schools find out more about Germany and our City and region’s active links and relationships – as well as to provide additional support and advice on how to engage with Germany and if interested, the German language.

Warum webinar?

The lively and interactive webinar was prepared for schools and teachers and is suitable for pupils at upper Key Stages 3 and 4 and some Key Stage 5 pupils.

The intention of the webinar is:

  • To present unknown information about Europe’s most populous and important economy
  • To show cultural links with Newcastle and the North East of England
  • To introduce learners to businesses which trade locally with Germany and whose employees use knowledge of Germany and German to help them with their work
  • To encourage language learning and demonstrate application of intercultural and language skills in a regional economic context

Warum? Resource Pack for Teachers

Download the Warum? German/y Resource Pack for Teachers. It can be used to support the webinar, or used independently of it.

The resource pack includes:

  • an overview of the North East and Germany links
  • Profiles of our twin towns
  • introduction and links to the poet and singer songwriter who performed at the webinar
  • Summaries of support for language and cultural links from British Council, Germany Embassy, UK German Connection, Goethe Institut, Youthbridge
  • Support from Durham County Council and International Newcastle for links with Germany and language teaching support

Practicalities and safeguarding

Most of the content is in English, with some cultural content in German from partners in our twin cities.

The event was hosted by British Council on Microsoft Teams Live, to safeguard learners and pupils were able to comment and ask questions through a moderated chat facility.

Newcastle schools interested in links

International Newcastle is working with the City Council and our twin city of Gelsenkirchen in Germany to provide opportunities for schools to develop relationships, as well as youth groups or clusters of schools.

This could involve the whole school, does not have to include language teaching, but could bring a wide range of benefits and help achieve a wide range of curriculum and personal development outcomes.

We can also connect schools to the support to help grow and build relationships.

Supporting our links with Germany

This webinar was developed by a partnership that can provide a wide range of support for schools and pupils across the curriculum.

We want to promote stronger ties and raise awareness of Germany, as a key cultural and trading partner and open up opportunities for schools and young people.
