International Newcastle Director, Declan Baharini, shared her experience, as co-ordinator of the Express Yourself: North East Festival of Languages, with a national audience of languages teachers at a Linguascope webinar on 30th January, hosted by Crista Hazell.

I was delighted to share our Festival experience, inspiring teachers and children and young people to have fun and try new ways of engaging with different languages and cultures.
I wanted to show how many of our activities can be accessed or adapted by schools and groups across the UK and can be done in one school, across a group of schools or wider area

Express Yourself: North East Festival of Languages is a celebration of diverse languages, cultures and communities in the North East of England. It has taken place annually since 2021, with the support of a wide range of local, regional and national partners giving their time, expertise and providing free activities, events and resources. Over 51,000 children and young people and 1,140 schools took part in our festivals from 2021-2023. We hope to engage even more in in this year’s festival, which launched with creative projects for schools and groups on 8th January and has live events, activities and resources available for the whole of March.
In the presentation, Declan explains more about the Festival:
- how it has progressed
- why and how we provide free opportunities for children and young people in schools, community schools and groups to inspire them to try new and creative ways to enjoy languages and cultures
- what’s on this year (click here for the What’s On programme)
- how activities can be adapted or developed in your area
We invited Declan to share the incredible and inspirational work she does with the Festival to empower teachers and galvanise children and young people to have fun with languages.
There are so many brilliant ideas in the presentation, links and tips, we hope you will be inspired to try some of these where you are in the UK or around the world.
