Tutoring and support for pupils in Modern Foreign Languages (GCSE/A Level) and English as an Additional Language – services for schools

Our partners at Success4All and The Language Centre Newcastle are inviting schools to engage with their services supporting pupils from diverse backgrounds and cultures and who speak a language other than English at home, or want to learn different languages and gain qualifications in these subjects. This is a great way to help children and young people achieve GCSEs and A Levels in languages, whilst sharing and valuing their culture and heritage, or that of others, as part of their learning. It is a means to improve skills, attainment and employment opportunities. They also provide support for those learning English as an Additional Language.

Support for Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

Starting in Autumn 2022, the service supported 176 learners to study for qualifications in 2023 (156 GCSE and 20 A Level) in 16 different languages across 15 schools and colleges, mainly in Newcastle, but also in schools in across the North East. 91% achieved GCSE grades 4-9 and 55% of A Level Students gained A*-B grades, with all of those completing A levels gaining entry to their university and course of choice.

The support of well trained tutors made all the difference in helping pupils achieve good results. Tutors are all native speakers, DBS checked, have safeguarding and curriculum training and have access to a wealth of language teaching resources. Tutors without qualifications receive tutoring training and achieve and AQA level 3 in tutoring before working with pupils.

Schools should call 0191 273 2229 or email info@s4a.org.uk to discuss the services. Engage now for the opportunity for pupils to benefit from tutoring for GCSEs and A Levels in 2024 and schools to benefit from classroom assistants and after school clubs.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

They are also offering support for learners who have English as an Additional Language, to help them build confidence and their communication skills in English.

They provide this through locally based bi-lingual classroom assistants, after school EAL support clubs and individual student assessments and learning plans.
