It’s National Careers Week across the UK! We are supporting a range of events in March for secondary schools on languages and careers, as part of Express Yourself: North East Festival of Languages. There are also lots of national and North East resources and support available to schools. Read on to find out more.

North East Resources
North East Ambition supports all North East Schools to achieve the Good Career Guidance benchmarks. They are providing a wide range of resources this week and year round to support schools and young people.
- Gatsby short guide to help careers leaders, school and college leaders, and others, navigate the recent updates to the Gatsby Benchmarks. The guide is available in two versions, one for schools and one for colleges and ITPs.
- Free resources, staff CPD, and facilitated networking with employers and other subject teachers to support your institution. Get in touch at goodcareers@northeast-ca.gov.uk for more details.
- Regional Careers Summit: North East Ambition recently hosted an event covering the revised Gatsby Benchmarks, experiences of the workplace, apprenticeship and technical education (including supported internships) and labour market information. Access a copy of the slides here.
- SEND Community of Practice Meeting – 18 March: For Career Leaders and professionals in both mainstream and special schools/APs supporting young people with SEND. See the training diary for joining instructions.
- Resources to help more young people onto apprenticeships and make it easier for employers to find apprentices. apprenticeReady
- North East LinkUp Portal Sign up to find employers for any activities or events you are planning or to find out about opportunities on offer to you or your students.
- Provider Portal For details of providers within the region who you might want to invite to support you with your Provider Access Legislation (PAL) requirements or to share with students and/or parents/carers as they plan their next steps.
- Resources: This database of resources can support you with your Benchmark achievement and quality of careers education.
- Directory: Search for providers (free and paid for), organised by Key Stage and Benchmark, to support careers provision delivery.
Festival Careers Events and Resources
There is still time for North East and UK schools to register to attend 3 of the 4 languages and careers webinars and access recordings for two of these.
We also have a range of resources available to support languages and careers activities.

NE & UK schools (Y8-9): Webinar to inspire pupils to progress with languages and choose them at GCSE. Introducing speakers from different backgrounds sharing their languages and careers journeys. With pupil booklet.
Other Festival languages and careers events
65 Year 10 pupils from 10 North East schools are competing in a tourism challenge with the Auckland Project, developing a presentation in Spanish about marketing Bishop Auckland as a tourism destination.
Supported by staff and students from Durham University, this is an excellent opportunity for Year 10 pupils learning Spanish to have some real-world language challenges. The presentations will be judged and a winning team awarded a prize.
140 pupils from 8 North East schools will take part in football themed workshops with Futbol Lingo, with a motivational talk, classroom language activity and practical football sessions in different languages.
283 pupils from 9 NE secondary schools took part in the Careers Roadshow at Durham University in January, with talks, exhibits and lots of advice on careers with German.
How languages changed my life: Inspirational stories from people connected to the North East
Personal stories of people of all ages and backgrounds, who are either originally from the North East of England, who may have gone elsewhere, or who came to live, work or study here.
They talk about how learning and speaking other languages influenced their education and career choices and the benefits that languages have brought them personally, socially and in their lives and careers.
