Remembrance Sunday ceremonies in Newcastle (12th November)

The day’s events will commence with Cllr Veronica Dunn, the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, laying wreaths at the Renwick War Memorial, Burma Star Memorial, Memorials to the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, and the South Africa War Memorial.

Following assembly at the Civic Centre, a military parade will proceed to Old Eldon Square through Percy Street and Blackett. Spectators can line the route as His Majesty’s Forces, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel John Gammon, Commanding Officer of 5 Fusiliers, march towards the memorial accompanied by the band of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

At 11 am, a two-minute silence will be observed to honour those who lost their lives in World Wars and subsequent conflicts. The Service of Remembrance, led by The Right Revd Dr Helen-Ann Hartley, Bishop of Newcastle, will feature wreath-laying by the Lord Lieutenant Lucy Winskell and the Lord Mayor. Subsequently, the Lord Mayor and her entourage will move to the Saluting Dias at Grey’s Monument, where she will acknowledge the parade as it returns to the Civic Centre.

Remembrance Sunday is a time for all of us to unite in reflection and honor the servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our country and way of life. The freedom we enjoy today is owed to them, and we will not forget.

Cllr Veronica Dunn, Lord Mayor of Newcastle

Our Armed Forces, both in history and the present, risk everything to safeguard our freedom and preserve lives. We owe an immense debt of gratitude to them, and I eagerly anticipate the people of Newcastle turning out in large numbers to pay their respects this Sunday.

Cllr Charlie Gray, Armed Forces Champion, Newcastle City Council

To ensure the safe execution of the Remembrance Sunday events, several road closures will be enforced. Blackett Street will be shut from 10 am to 12:30 pm, with temporary closures at Sandyford Road, St Mary’s Place, John Dobson Street, and Percy Street.
