Spanish Teachers’ Day in Newcastle a great success! Imaginative ways to spark creativity and engage learners of Spanish

Over 70 teachers of Spanish from across the region enjoyed a training day on Spanish language teaching at Newcastle University on Saturday 4th March, as part of Express Yourself: North East Festival of Languages, co-ordinated by International Newcastle.

The General Consul of Spain in Edinburgh, Ignacio Cartagena Núñez, welcomed everyone to the day, which was organised by Javier Ramos Linares from the Spanish Embassy Education Department (Consejería de Educación) and Jorge Catalá from Newcastle University School of Modern Languages.

The training day included a wide range of presentations and talks sharing imaginative ways of engaging learners, using creative tools, such as art, advertising and poetry, music, film, comics and design challenges to inspire learners and spark their creativity and enjoyment of learning Spanish.

There was an opportunity to network with other teachers, enjoy a Spanish lunch and 6 teachers won free immersion courses in Spain. Spanish language teachers from Newcastle University, Salamanca, Burgos, Estudio Sampere and Mester gave engaging presentations and the Consejería de Educación shared their free resources.

If you missed it, the resources from the Consejería de Educación and other courses around the UK are shared on this Festival page along with some additional films about Spain and the Spanish speaking world. There are links to the resources and materials, TECLA magazine, digital platforms and more. You can sign up for their newsletters, which give details of upcoming training and courses in the UK and Spain and also follow them on facebook and instagram. Their instagram page shares additional resources for use in teaching.

Thank you to all the presenters, organisers and to all the teachers who attended.
