Turing Scheme 2022-23 is open for registrations – support for Newcastle schools to apply

The Turing Scheme is the UK Government’s programme to provide global opportunities in education and training for British citizens and is open for registrations now from schools, colleges and universities. The Scheme opens for applications on 31st March and closes on 29th April for visits up to 1st September 2023.

International Newcastle and Newcastle City Council (Education, School Effectiveness) provide support to schools who are interested in applying by helping with schools links in other countries and with completing the application. We were successful in supporting schools in 2022, who are going on visits this year.

Why get involved in Turing?

Schools can benefit enormously from developing international links and it can be life-changing for pupils:

  • opening up new perspectives, projects and dialogues
  • enhancing the curriculum across the board
  • building invaluable international connections
  • strengthening intercultural awareness for staff and pupils
  • supporting language learning and teaching (where this is an element of the international partnership)
  • raising aspirations and confidence of pupils
  • helping pupils to make positive education and life choices and impacting on future career opportunities

Another important factor is that the Turing Scheme provides additional funding to support pupils and schools in areas of higher levels of disadvantage to overcome the financial barriers to be able to engage in the activity. Many of the schools and the pupils involved, will not have had an international connections before and these pupils may never have had the opportunity to engage with pupils from other schools internationally or to go on school visits abroad.

Supporting Newcastle schools to apply

Schools can access help and support to develop new, or enhance existing, international links, as well as practical support with applications.

Support for internationalism in Newcastle

The support provided for Turing is part of a wider package of support for young people aged 0-30 and the organisations that work with them in Newcastle, to promote international connections, experiences and opportunities, develop intercultural awareness and to support language learning and teaching. All of these are important for young people and the choices they make, as they move through education and into their future careers.

International Newcastle works closely with the City Council and a wide range of local, regional, national and international partners to support the ambition of helping children and young people in our city to become confident, global citizens and to have opportunities that they may otherwise not have.
