Language teachers can benefit from attending a range of events organised by our partners, the Association of Language Learning North East. There are a range of free events, as well as events for members, where you can meet other language teachers and professionals, online and in person this Autumn.

PHOrum: 4-5.30pm, 23rd November on zoom:
The termly online meeting for ALL Primary members with three presentations. Click here to book
- From worms to wellies – outdoor learning – Janet Clarke: Janet will share some of the French lesson ideas that she has successfully used in her school grounds at Wimboldsley, as well as French language resources from Canada where they believe outdoor learning for children is extremely important to stimulate young children’s minds. Using natural objects provides many opportunities for children to use a foreign language whatever their age group.
- Motivating end of unit activities with a real audience – Alistair Sage: Alistair will outline the process of ‘teaching backwards’- devising a final motivating end of unit activity, and then working out what needs to be taught to get there as well as considering the importance of explicit discussion with learners about the learning journey. The example will be a Year 3 class book.
- My go-to pair activities – Nathalie Paris: In this show and tell, Nathalie will share, in an interactive way, the top activities that she uses during pair work in order to maximise the involvement of every pupil in their learning. We have so little time in our lessons that she feels we need to get them working more efficiently. You can share your ideas too!
STALL with James Stubbs – An Accent on Phonics: 7pm 24th November on zoom
The termly online meeting for ALL Secondary members. Click here to register. So many of the activities we use in the classroom offer amazing opportunities to get pupils discussing complex concepts through the language they are learning. This session will look at one highly versatile activity, suitable for all ages, stages and European languages. We’ll explore how it can be used to prompt interaction whilst also (in this case) involving pupils in learning how and when to use accents in Spanish and what to make of homophones in French.
ALL Early Career Teachers and Trainee Social : 6-7pm, 30th November on zoom
De-colonising Christmas: This event is free and open to all, with a guest Eearly Career Teacher speaker and Carline Conlon (from the ALL De-colonising group). Click here to book a place.
On the LINE: 4.30-6.30pm, 5th December at Newcastle University
Free of charge and open to all. Click here to book (for catering purposes). There will be refreshments (from 4.30), the meeting from 5.00-6.30 and a wine reception to welcome everyone back.
LINE stands for Languages In the North-East where we are all part of the front line defending, and advancing, the progress of the Languages we love. The event is a showcase for things that are going on in the region and nationally as well as a great chance for catching up with colleagues old and new.
Suggestions of something to include on the programme are welcome (a regional project etc.). Contact Steven Fawkes.
