Chinese New Year celebrations in Newcastle on Sunday 22nd January

The 2023 Chinese New Year celebrations are set to be a spectacle of colour and sound taking place on Sunday 22nd January in Newcastle’s China Town, with festivities returning for the first time since the 2020 pandemic.

Celebrating the Year of the Rabbit, festival goers will be able to see the heralded Dragon Dance parade from 11.30am – starting outside Fujiyama restaurant – as the procession makes its way along Stowell Street towards the Chinese Arch. The parade will be accompanied by inspiring lion and unicorn dance performances and remarkable kung-fu demonstrations over the course of the day, both outside and indoors at various local businesses within China Town, all open for the public to see.

Upon the parade’s arrival at the Chinese Arch, speeches will be made to commemorate Chinese New Year with the attendance of special guests. Fairground rides and stalls on Bath Lane will be available during the celebration, with plenty of Chinese foods on offer to keep you fuelled throughout the celebrations. Festival goers are also welcome to visit the Chinese Association situated on Stowell Street and participate in a selection of activities exploring Chinese culture and heritage.
