A group of local young people had stage-side access at the MOBO Awards at Newcastle’s Utility Arena on 18th February. It was the first time the event has been hosted by the city and featured stars from across the world in a dazzling evening celebrating and recognising Black music and culture. Young people were invited to attend the incredible MOBO Awards evening, and it was absolutely amazing! We had a fabulous spot right next to the stage, giving us the perfect view of all the performances and celebrations.

The young people who attended included Sixth Formers from Jesmond Park Academy, our first secondary School of Sanctuary, as well as young people from sanctuary backgrounds, including those who live at NEST and those who have attended International House. It was an unforgettable experience for the young people and they had such good fun!”

A huge thank you to Jim Mawdsley and Lucy Bridges, who introduced us to the staff at the MOBOs and secured our incredible stage-side spots.

Thanks also to Tom Lynam and Jenny Hartley, who helped organise the trip and accompanied all the young people to the event, and to Lee Elwood at NEST, who ensured that the young people at NEST could enjoy this amazing opportunity. It was absolutely fabulous!”

In the run up to iconic MOBO Awards night, Newcastle hosted a dynamic and inclusive Fringe programme to showcase the richness of Black music and culture in the North East while creating meaningful opportunities for local talent and communities.

This included live performances, workshops, industry summits, and community-led initiatives to leave a lasting legacy for the region. It aims to inspire young creatives and highlight the exceptional talent in the North East.

The Fringe programme was delivered in collaboration with Newcastle City Council, MOBO and partners Generator, The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, Glow, Northern Roots, Northern Baby, Tyneside Cinema, World Headquarters and Sister Shack, with the support of over 50 community and industry representatives across the city.
