This is an opportunity for people in Newcastle and Gateshead to be involved with an artist residency at BALTIC with a theatre company called Projekt Europa during the week of the 16th of August. The company are particularly looking to work with participants who have moved or migrated to the UK from anywhere in the world, any age or background.

This residency forms part of Arts Council England’s commissioned showcase, Horizon – Performance Created in England and there will be a film shown at the Edinburgh Festivals in August.

The commitment will require participants to be available for two evening sessions, either Monday 16th and Wednesday the 18th of August, or Tuesday 17th and Thursday 19th August. In addition, all participants will be required to take part in a session on Saturday 21st August, 10am – 5pm.

ABOUT THE ACTIVITY

Maria Aberg, Artistic Director, Projekt Europa

For one week in August, we are coming to the Baltic in Gateshead to develop a new piece called LET YOUR HANDS SING IN THE SILENCE. The piece is based on the personal family tree of the main performer, who grew up in Slovakia and moved to the UK about 15 years ago.

As part of making this piece, we would like to connect with people in Gateshead and Newcastle who are curious about theatre and would like the experience of working with us to make the piece.

We are looking for participants of any age, who have lived experience of migration and who are able to communicate in English, even if that’s not your first language – and we are particularly keen to hear from people who have no experience of theatre at all!

The piece is based on personal memories and we want to invite participants to share their own memories. We’ll ask some very specific questions, such as: ‘Can you remember the first time you heard a piece of music that you really loved?’ or ‘Can you describe your most treasured item when you were five years old?’ and use your answers to create material that you can explore on stage. We will also be doing some movement, but you need no experience of having done that before, and you definitely don’t need to be a dancer!

On the final day of our work together, we will put together some of the material we have made, and film it. The film will be shown as part of a showcase of English theatre called Horizon, which connects new work and ideas with international partners during the Edinburgh festivals in August 2021.

We hope it will be a creative, interesting and inspiring week – if you think it sounds exciting, we’d love to hear from you.
