Grants for courses in Spain, free CPD in the UK for teachers of Spanish, teaching resources and free Spanish film programme for schools

Spanish is being taught in more schools in Newcastle than ever before. One of our Newcastle City of Languages priorities is to support the teaching of languages and ensure teachers have access to training and resources. We work closely with the Spanish Embassy Education Department and our Modern Foreign Language Networks to ensure that local teachers of Spanish are aware of all the professional development opportunities and resources that are available to them for free.

Find out below about grants for teachers of Spanish to attend summer courses in Spain, which have proved popular with teachers from Newcastle who have attended previously. There are also two free events in Edinburgh and London and a wide range of free teaching resources. There is also an invitation to schools to access Spanish films and worksheets as part of the Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival in October.

Los Futbolísimos (The Footballest)

Los Futbolísimos follows a school football team of 11-year-olds in Spain. They are near the bottom of the league and facing being replaced by a choir if they do not win a game. Unfortunately, referees in their games keep mysteriously falling fast asleep mid-match, meaning opponents can and do cheat wildly.

Rara (Weird)

Since their parents split up, Sara and her younger sister live with their mother, whose new partner is a woman. Everyday life for the four of them is very similar to that of other families. But not everyone sees it that way – her father in particular has his doubts. As Sara’s 13th birthday approaches, she feels rather overwhelmed: her first crush, her body is starting to change and to top it all off, conflicts over loyalty with her parent.

Rara is an affectionate, endearing, meaningful take on family life from a non-traditional perspective, reflecting the LGBT community’s continuing struggle to gain equal rights and respect in the world.

CartasVivas (Living Letters) *For S5-S6 only*

CartasVivas delves into the lives of the women who shaped 20th century Spain and Latin America. These short films are an excellent stepping stone from secondary to university- level education and have been included in curriculums across the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, and many other European countries. CartasVivas recovers the female memory of the 20th century while at the same time deepening the learning of language, literature, culture and thought.
