Call for people from ethnic minority backgrounds to take part in research to improve mental health services

Dr Evgenia Stepanova is a researcher on the EVOLVE research project focusing on Informing culturally competent mental health services in England led by Newcastle University and funded by the NIHR Three Research Schools Mental Health Research Programme. The team is seeking the views of people from ethnic minority populations in the North East of England to inform the research.

COVID has shown an unequal impact on ethnic minority populations in the UK. Recent research has reported that compared to White British, many people from ethnic minority backgrounds experienced higher levels of anxiety and depression across the pandemic, but they had less support from mental health services. These inequalities have been widened in several ways by the pandemic due to lockdowns, quarantine and closure of some supporting services.

Through working together with ethnic minority communities and care professionals, this overall project aims to establish culturally competent mental health services, through an analysis of routine healthcare data, stakeholder interviews and a consensus exercise.
