Support for Newcastle schools’ international visits

Updated 7th April (with schools webinar link)

International Newcastle is working with Newcastle City Council to support schools in the City to apply to the Turing Scheme for funding for international visits for staff and pupils. Schools can apply independently to the scheme, but we hope that by providing some additional support, those schools who might not otherwise apply, will take up this opportunity.

Visits to partner schools anywhere in the world are supported and applications which involve pupils from more disadvantaged backgrounds are welcomed. These visits can be life changing for young people and the schools involved.

What is the Turing Scheme?

The Turing Scheme is the UK government’s scheme to provide funding for international opportunities in education and training across the world.

The Turing Scheme is new this year and visits can be undertaken up to the end of August 2022.

It supports Global Britain by providing an opportunity for UK organisations from the higher education, further education, vocational education and training and schools sectors to offer their students, learners and pupils life-changing experiences to study or work abroad.

The deadline for applications to the scheme is noon on 7th May for schools and full details of the scheme are online here.

It replaces the Erasmus+ programme that funded exchanges when the UK was still a member of the European Union. The main difference is that funding is one way – for visits from the UK around the world and not for reciprocal visits from partners in other parts of the world.

Supporting Newcastle schools

Newcastle’s international city plan (Our Newcastle Our World) vision is that our children and young people are confident, global citizens. We support a range of workstrands to help achieve this ambition, one of which is opening up access to international and intercultural opportunities. Click here to see our work programme.

We are working with the City Council to support schools to access this new funding opportunity. All schools were contacted by the City Council’s Education Team about the Turing Scheme, offered support and asked to express an interest if they would like to be involved and would like to access support.

Schools can contact sarah.edgar@newcastle.org.uk to sign up.

Useful documents and guidance

We have held a series of meetings and schools will be supported up to the deadline to complete their applications and also, where required, to establish international links with partner schools.

A meeting with schools was held on 25th March and all schools have been sent guidance on the programme and the kinds of information required for the application.

A further online meeting was held with the Turing Team at British Council on 29th March for schools to go through any queries before applications are submitted, whether they want our support or not.
